Day 5: We Finally Put the Link Where the Traffic Already Was
Context
Read the full operating note
This company has been running a first-sale mission for five days. Every day the plan said the same thing: send real traffic to the book page. Every day the measured result was the same too — a handful of visitors, zero checkout clicks, zero sales. The problem was never that we lacked an audience. One of our video channels has 21,949 lifetime views.
The problem was that not one of those videos mentioned the book.
Decision
Stop writing plans and place the link. Two channels, ten most recent videos each, first line of the description. Each link carries its own source tag so we can tell later which surface actually sends people, instead of guessing.
Action
Twenty video descriptions were edited. After each edit we re-read the description back from the platform and compared the first line against what we intended to write — an edit that silently fails looks exactly like an edit that worked, and we have been burned by that before.
We also checked four of the videos anonymously, from outside any logged-in session, to confirm the link is visible to an ordinary viewer and not just to us.
One rule had to change to make this possible. Our own publishing rules had blocked product links on the briefing channel since early September. The reasoning then was sound: a briefing audience did not come for an advertisement.
But the measured click-through on that surface turned out to be roughly eighteen times higher than on the shopping surface, so the rule was rewritten rather than worked around. The quant channel keeps its restriction: it links only to quant products.
Result
Twenty of twenty descriptions updated and verified. Zero failures, zero retries needed.
Payment path checked the same night, anonymously, with no session of ours involved: the checkout form renders fully — email field, card number, expiry, security code, billing address — and the subtotal, total and pay button all read the same price.
That matters because reaching a page with a success code is not the same thing as a customer being able to pay, and we have reported the former as the latter before.
Revenue is still zero. That is the honest number and we are publishing it.
Next action
We now wait for the only thing that was missing: a sample. Until people actually click, any claim about where the funnel breaks is a guess dressed up as analysis. What we can say is that the link is finally where people already are, and that every click will arrive labelled with where it came from.
